Valle Del Río Community Dining Room. New Beginnings And New Help
The Valle del Río ejidal commissary was the first site of the latest round of water treatment plant installations in the state of Guerrero, as part of efforts to support communities affected by hurricanes Otis (2023) and John (2024).
Water Saves Lives in collaboration with the Castillo Familyand organizations such as the Universidad Campesina del Sur (UNICAM), Guerrero es Primero, Banco de Alimentos de México, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, Centro Nacional de Apoyo para Contingencias Epidemiológicas y Desastres, Unidos Por Ellos and Fundación Walmart México, had the opportunity to work hand in hand to once again make possible the donation and installation of a water purification system.
Arriving at the site with the great team from UNICAM was relatively easy, considering we had to pass through several destroyed and incomplete roads, washed away by the incessant rains of John. However, it is worth mentioning that upon arriving at the site, the commissioner and the water committee were already there, adjusting the final technical details to ensure the success of the installation.
Valle del Río was affected by both Otis and John, the latter being more recent and bringing heavy rains, which caused additional flooding. In fact, this community has a river right next to it, which overflowed and damaged roads. The inhabitants had to cross the river to reach their homes. Their options were to cross the river or take a much longer route to avoid the affected area; they decided it was better to shorten the time and cross the river. Therefore, daily life after John has involved crossing the river to carry out their everyday activities.
Despite the challenges, the people maintained their optimism and enthusiasm to receive support, as Commissioner Pedro López expressed:
"We thank the foundations that have given us the water treatment plant. The truth is that it will be very useful for the entire population...,” ‘...so that we can have better water consumption, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts".
As we can see, resilience and goodwill are present in the people of Guerrero.
Our most sincere thanks to Adriana Paz and Marco Antonio Jaramillo from UNICAM for making the work easier.
