El Zapote Municipal Police Station. Long Reaches
The residents of El Zapote, who previously could only rely on water sources that were not always safe, now have an alternative for drinking clean water with the installation of a water treatment plant.
Every day, villagers face one of the most basic needs: drinking water. Often, the water found in nearby streams or wells is not suitable for consumption. But thanks to the support of the Castillo family and organizations such as the Universidad Campesina del Sur (UNICAM), Guerrero es Primero, Banco de Alimentos de México, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, Centro Nacional de Apoyo para Contingencias Epidemiológicas y Desastres, Unidos Por Ellos, and the Walmart Mexico Foundation, El Zapote has benefited from the great support of the installation of a water purification system.
With the arrival of this equipment, we hope for a profound change in community life, beginning with the fact that this system represents an economic relief, as the money families previously spent on buying water can now be invested in other basic needs.
We always keep in mind, and like to convey, that while access to water is a significant step towards improving health and well-being, the real challenge lies in maintaining the system's continuous and efficient operation. This requires the support of the community's Water Committee members, who assist with regular maintenance and operation, as well as a collective commitment to ensure its long-term sustainability.
As we can see, this type of project is not a magic solution, as it requires constant effort and the involvement of the entire community. Sustainability will also depend on the population's commitment to water conservation and their ongoing participation in the project. So far, everyone is very happy and grateful. Mauro Arturo Palacios, the Coordinator of the Water Committee, shares the following words:
"The installation of the water purification plant will benefit us a lot, especially after everything that happened with Hurricane John. We have been suffering from water shortages, and it will benefit the entire population. Thank you very much to all the foundations that contributed to making this a reality".
We would like to extend special thanks to Adriana Paz from UNICAM for being our connection to the community’s residents.
