Huertecillas Municipal Police Station. Realities That Open Scenarios
The donation of a water treatment plant to the village of Huertecillas, although well-intentioned, reveals various problems and limitations that need to be addressed to fully understand the impact of the various initiatives to support the population.
The donation of water treatment equipment undoubtedly provides an immediate solution that addresses part of the problem, however it is of utmost importance to understand the underlying causes that led to the lack of access to safe drinking water in the first place. In many cases, villages such as Huertecillas face deep structural problems, such as lack of adequate infrastructure and/or extreme poverty, and a comprehensive approach that includes improvements in infrastructure, education and local administration is certainly required.
On the other hand, the donation of a water treatment plant has a positive impact in terms of health and quality of life if properly managed. The provision of safe drinking water can reduce waterborne diseases and improve the overall health of the community. However, the long-term sustainability of the project must be ensured for this benefit to be permanent.
It is crucial that the intervention be accompanied by careful planning and adequate training. In the case of Huertecillas, a water committee was created to ensure the proper functioning of the equipment.
"A purifier was installed for the good of the children, because we bring spring water but we do not boil or strain it and now thanks to the foundations we will no longer drink contaminated water"
Our most sincere thanks to the Castillo Family and organizations such as the Universidad Campesina del Sur, Guerrero es Primero, Banco de Alimentos de México, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, Centro Nacional de Apoyo para Contingencias Epidemiológicas y Desastres, Unidos Por Ellos and Fundación Walmart México, for their accompaniment in the process, their support has been fundamental to reach these communities.
We also recognize Adriana Paz and Marco Antonio Jaramillo, from UNICAM for all their logistical work before, during and after the installation of the water treatment plant.
