Ejidal Police Station Of Huamúchil. Beyond Water
The donation of a water treatment plant in the town of Huamúchil, although well-intentioned, reveals several harsh realities and challenges that go beyond the simple act of delivering a product. This case makes visible the support of civil society organizations that want to contribute their grain of sand, but it also exposes the current situation of several communities in the Mexican Republic that face difficulties to have a good quality of life, even in the most basic aspects.
This donation was made possible thanks to the support of the Castillo family and organizations such as the Universidad Campesina del Sur, Guerrero es Primero, Banco de Alimentos de México, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, Centro Nacional de Apoyo para Contingencias Epidemiológicas y Desastres, Unidos Por Ellos and Fundación Walmart México, who logistically and financially supported the arrival of this equipment to the communities that need it most.
The installation of the water purification equipment in the town of Huamúchil represents a significant step in improving water quality, which will benefit the health of the community, which has struggled with a serious lack of infrastructure and resources, according to José Alfredo Sanchez, a resident of the town.
"A purification plant was installed for the benefit of the children, because we bring spring water but we do not boil or strain it and now, thanks to the foundations, we will no longer drink contaminated water"
As we can see, the community accepts the support with great enthusiasm, which is why in addition to the enthusiasm we also take into account that one of the most significant approaches is to provide adequate training to the local water committee, since the operation of the equipment, although simple, requires specific technical knowledge. This is a positive step towards not depending constantly on external assistance, thus promoting local self-sufficiency, of course with the appropriate institutional support, but always aiming at citizen empowerment to avoid falling into welfarism.
The solution offered reduces water-related health problems, but the sustainability of the project also lies in the improvement of local infrastructure, education and the active participation of the community in the management of the resources available to them. We hope that with time, with the motivation of the arrival of water treatment equipment and with organized work, a state of collective participation will be reached.
To Mr. Alejandro Hernández, millions of thanks for sharing with us all his knowledge of the towns of Coyuca, his support was indispensable to reach the community.
