Xaltianguis Police Station. The New Reality: Visible Benefits
The donation of a water treatment plant to the local commissary in the town of Xaltianguis has been received with a mixture of relief and hope. However, while this gesture is valuable and necessary, it is of utmost importance to mention realistically that challenges remain.
Even before Hurricane Otis, the town was facing problems with its drinking water supply. Residents relied on contaminated water sources, which undoubtedly increased the risk of disease and health complications.
The arrival of the water purification equipment represents a breakthrough, as it can transform water from untreated sources into potable water, reducing the risk of disease and improving basic living conditions in the village. Its presence in the commissary will allow the village to have constant access to clean water.
In a context of crisis such as the one the village is experiencing, every improvement in basic infrastructure is crucial for public health and general well-being. However, the donation, while important, does not solve all the problems as the village still faces challenges such as: lack of continuous access to clean water, the need for adequate water infrastructure, and the development of local capacity for the management and maintenance of the equipment. The water treatment plant is a step forward, but it is a partial solution in a much larger picture.
This donation is a reminder that external support and solidarity can have a high impact on communities, but it also underscores the need for a holistic approach to solving structural problems. Santa Limas inhabitant of the community tells us that,
“Thanks to this project that came here to Xaltianguis... we are grateful, it is a management that was done, thank God it was fulfilled, this is beneficial for everyone…”

Lasting change requires continued commitment from donors, local authorities and organizations working on the ground. It is vital that the community receives ongoing support to ensure that the water treatment plant functions effectively and that the underlying problems related to water supply are resolved.
Millions of thanks to the Castillo Family and organizations such as the Universidad Campesina del Sur, Guerrero es Primero, Banco de Alimentos de México, Centro Mexicano para la Filantropía, Centro Nacional de Apoyo a Contingencias Epidemiológicas y Desastres, Unidos Por Ellos and Fundación Walmart México, as this benefit was made possible thanks to their support, both financial and logistical.
