Juxalpa. Helping to Change Habits
Imagine if you had to give your children soda because it was cheaper than milk or water, how would you feel?
This is the case for the children of the Juxalpa community in the highlands of Chiapas, who drink Coke as their main source of hydration from an early age.
Therefore, through Water Saves Lives and the alliance with Fundación ProTseltal, we installed water purifiers in the community's elementary school. But unlike other installations, this time our ambassador, Claudio Linares, helped us go further and work to raise awareness among the community's residents and change their habitual consumption of soft drinks to a healthy way of hydrating.
Claudio, in addition to being a Clarity client, is a pediatrician and children's pulmonologist, and thanks to his profession he was able to identify the major problem at hand:
Claudio, además de ser cliente de Clarity, es pediatra y neumólogo infantil, y gracias a su profesión pudo identificar la gran problemática que se presenta:
"They drink soda to hydrate instead of water, and even their rituals include Coke".
The impact of the experience was such that he decided to get even more involved with the cause. Concerned about the consequences of this bad habit in children, he gladly agreed to share his time and knowledge to give training sessions and materials to health promoters in the communities with which Fundación Pro Tseltal works.

This will help raise awareness of the great risk to children and the implications for their health. Addiction to this beverage is difficult to break, but with awareness programs, coupled with access to clean water, we can help children improve their nutrition.
It motivates us to know that we have already begun this work with the 200 children in the community of Juxalpa with whom Claudio shared this information, and with the purification equipment installed, they will now be able to replace soda with pure water, at least during school hours. These are small changes that can transform the health of children.
The mission of Water Saves Lives is to improve the well-being of children from marginalized groups and communities by providing access to clean water and raising awareness of its importance for health and how to take care of it for the environment.
