The reality of Mexico, the double risk of water in communities, San Pablo Ozotepec

In some communities in Mexico, the risk posed by the state of the water is twofold: not only is it scarce, but what little is available is contaminated.

The double risk of the water in the communities

This is the case in the town of San Pablo Ozotepec, in the municipality of Milpa Alta, where several children have suffered gastrointestinal illnesses and dehydration from drinking tap or piped water that has a yellowish color and an unpleasant odor.

For many of us, it is unthinkable that someone would drink water straight from the tap or consume it after boiling, but for residents of communities like this one, a water jug is out of reach due to its high price.

In addition to access to water, families face many other disadvantages. Some of the community's children attend school, while many others have to collect maize and work in neighboring communities. Regardless of their activities, the children do not drink water all day, and when they do, it is not of the best quality.

Niño Trabajando

In order to help families in this situation, we contacted La Realidad de México A.C., an organization that provides food, recreation, health and environmental assistance to families in vulnerable situations, mainly children between the ages of zero and 17.

Together we organized and brought a water purifier to this community, where more than 100 children will be able to drink with confidence, with quality water and without risking their health.

This installation was a momentous occasion for the community: The town's first running tap was installed 87 years ago, on October 2, 1935.

ABefore that, the people of San Pablo had to go all the way to Xochimilco to get water. Although it ensured access to water, it didn't ensure good quality water. The arrival of the first tap was a cause for celebration, tears of emotion, and community unity. Every year since, people have decorated their taps to celebrate the arrival of Mother Water.

Caída del Agua

Now, in October 2022, the installation of the Clarity Purifier marks the day when the children of the region will have clean, pure water.
